BUYER EDUCATION / PRACTICAL FIELD NOTE

Data governance diagnostic, internal audit or certification: what are you actually buying?

Choose the right type of help—and avoid paying for an assurance claim that an operational workshop cannot provide.

An engraved catalogue, source layers and magnifier; a metaphor for knowing what information exists.

Practical information and fictional examples for scoping, not claims of client work, measured results, independent assurance or certification.

A diagnostic helps choose and design work

A practical diagnostic identifies business-critical domains, relevant owners, current records and observed evidence gaps within an agreed sample. Its output can be a prioritised implementation backlog and a plan for a bounded pilot. It may reveal concerns that require additional professional advice. Unless separately specified, it does not provide an independent audit opinion, legal advice or certification.

Internal audit tests against defined criteria

An internal audit engagement has its own mandate, independence considerations, audit criteria, sampling and reporting methodology. A useful data governance team can support preparation by making processes and evidence clear, but delivery of a register is not the same as independent assurance that controls operate effectively. Confirm the actual audit scope and qualified personnel.

Certification and specialist opinions are different again

Formal certifications depend on the standard, scope, accredited or authorised assessors and processes. Privacy legal interpretations, penetration testing and security audits call for appropriate specialist expertise. Be wary of a sales proposal that uses the word compliant without saying with what, against which evidence and under whose authority.

Scope the service around the decision you need

If the question is “What should we fix first?”, start with a diagnostic. If it is “Will this control satisfy an audit requirement?”, engage the relevant assurance professional. If it is “How do we make policy work in these systems?”, commission implementation support with acceptance tests. Often these workstreams complement each other, but their conclusions should not be confused.

QUESTIONS BEFORE DECIDING

What buyers usually ask

Does a diagnostic produce a maturity score?

It may summarise scoped findings, but no unexplained rating is proof of compliance.

Can one firm provide all services?

Only with the relevant competencies, independence and clearly separated scopes.

NEXT PRACTICAL STEP

Start with one decision, not a platform purchase.

We can discuss a scoped engagement using the context above. Do not send confidential information through an initial inquiry.
